DINNER TIME

DINNER TIME
Dinner. Or more like… “What’s for dinner?”
For a good percentage of the population dinner can stir up a myriad of thoughts and emotions. For my mother, it was something she just ‘wanted to get over with…’ because night after night, she despised meal planning and the agonizing thought of ‘what the heck to make with chicken… again’ or how to break out of her rut/routine of making the same meals over and over again.
The mentally-taxed workaholics don’t stress over dinner too much – usually it’s a night out with friends or colleagues, or a working dinner ordering in pizza or Chinese. For dieters, dinner is simple… if it’s not eating another salad or some Zone-friendly, carb-less meal, then it is some ready-made Nutrisystem/Weight Watchers/Jenny Craig special.
But for foodies who love to cook, don’t think we have it easy either. Sometimes having too many choices as to ‘what to make’ can be just as difficult. And even though it can be fun to be the next Iron Chef game show in your own kitchen, taking whatever you have in your fridge, freezer or pantry and trying to be a wizard… sometimes dinner can still stump us.
I am happy that I have been able to continue to try new things, make up recipes as I go along and enjoy cooking all these years. But I have discovered that dinner isn’t just about eating, it has become a lost art today.
It’s appalling to go to a restaurant and see families not even communicating at the dinner table, but rather texting, playing video games, listening to iPods or watching TV instead of enjoying dinner out. It’s even more appalling to me to see this happen in people’s homes. What’s happened to the dinner hour, the conclusion of a good day and sharing while eating?
I think as much as the Food Network has tried to inspire families, couples and singles to cook together to make things fun, somehow this hasn’t really caught on to the rest of society to recapture what was a staple several decades ago while growing up.
Regardless, I think dinner should become enjoyable again. Not just the shopping for food, meal planning, cooking and dining, but the whole idea of dinner. From sitting down at the table and savoring a meal to really enjoying what the heck you’re eating. Maybe today, time is so limited. But I don’t believe it has to be, to bring dinner back to where it needs to be.
As we get into these colder months, and are in mad search of comforting food and delicious meals rev up our senses, perhaps we can all get dinner-inspired once again.
Going to wrap this up now and go make some grilled chicken with roasted red pepper cream sauce over garlic-basil linguine.
Enjoy your dinner tonight!
