TO SPEAK OR NOT TO SPEAK

The voice. We all have one. And there is a time and place for everything. Some say that knowing this ‘time and place’ is a learned behavior, some say it’s instinct and can’t be learned….you’re either born with it or you’re not.

In an era where everyone has become ‘politically correct’ and often criticized for being such and being overly sensitive, I think in some cases it’s good to be p.c. And the reason for this is that those who were not ‘born’ with this’ time and place’ behavior filter have to use one to at least show some sensitivity.

Flip this completely over to the other side of things… isn’t it sad that we have to ‘enforce’ being politically correct because people today are so ignorant? Isn’t a shame that in America, a melting pot, that certain things like prejudice, hatred, sexism, racism, ageism and (the list is too long to mention) even exists?

WHEN will there be acceptance, tolerance and understanding?

Perhaps the bigger question is WHEN WILL THERE BE R-E-S-P-E-C-T? (sing it,Aretha!)

I think it’s a shame that there are so many polluted and closed minds. I also think true character is ugly and revealing. Sure people want to ‘be themselves’ – but in some cases it’s best if they are not. Being vocal does NOT mean one has a right to be abusive, disrespectful and full of hatred.

Media and the Arts are venues, key vehicles to reach a large audience of people. Some people got into this business to use their voice to be heard to disseminate information to people and to educate and bring awareness to the masses. Some even have utilized it as a platform for bringing about positive change.

I believe some people in the media and arts have forgotten their responsibility and others are abusing their privilege to infect and spread hatred. Freedom of speech and the press is one thing…. Being ignorant and deliberately rude is something else. While everyone has an opinion, consciously voicing negativity and hatred isn’t something that is going to make the world a better place, is it?

The racist voices on radio and TV are appalling.

I am baffled as to why vocal platforms have been used to glorify the actions of those not contributing positive things to society. I am also horrified by the idea that money and ratings seem to surpass ethics and responsibility.

It’s time things change. Speaking up and speaking out against hatred and prejudice is very necessary. This is where we need to exercise our own voices. The verbal abuse has to stop. Bringing people down shouldn’t be rewarded, escalating someone’s fame, glory, income or status.

So why are these people rewarded?
