RESOLVING TO RESOLVE THE NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTION

“What’s your New Year’s Resolution?”  Don’t you HATE that question?  I do.  I mostly hate the question because it means you are planning on resolving something in the New Year because it’s the New Year, (thus …out of obligation) – not because you have full intent to resolve anything otherwise.

One of the reasons most New Year’s resolutions fail, is for this reason. It’s because it seems ‘forced’ and ‘unnatural’ to resolve something just because a calendar says so.  It’s the same beef I have with Thanksgiving and the ‘spirit’ of Christmas and Valentine’s Day.

I don’t think we should only ‘resolve’ problems/issues/break bad habits in January.  We should do this all year around.   Shouldn’t we?

I don’t think we should only ‘give thanks’ at Thanksgiving.  We should be grateful and thankful for all our blessings all year around.  Shouldn’t we?

I don’t think we should only be ‘good little girls and boys’ because Santa is watching in December.  We should be good all year around and instead say “Happy Birthday, Jesus” instead, Shouldn’t we?

I don’t think we should only say ‘I love you’ because it’s Valentine’s Day. Afterall, LIFE IS SHORT – and we should show our loved ones how much we care, all year around.  Shouldn’t we?

So just because the calendar says the New Year is coming, shouldn’t necessarily be ‘the time’ to resolve whatever we need to resolve.  Let’s resolve things when the problems arise, so they don’t linger, so no resentment builds, so no one has hard feelings they have to feel burdened by holding on to.

Let’s resolve to resolve the New Year’s Resolution – and maybe not this New Year’s, but sometime in the not-so-distant future.  Let’s resolve what’s on the calendar and become people who are good, kind, showing love and gratitude, and resolving things all year long.

That’s my New Year’s Resolution.
